The surname Garrett has its roots in the Old French name Garrard, which itself is derived from the Germanic elements ger, meaning spear, and hard, meaning brave or strong. The name first appeared in England after the Norman Conquest of 1066, where it was introduced by the Normans.
Several years ago, I did some research into my family origins, and by virtue of being a clever software developer, I indeed traced things back to this formative year of 1066. I will post the results of my findings here, which are thanks to a wonderful fellow Garrett — John E. Garrett, Jr. — who once ran a website which traced our common ancestry, but of course his website is now defunct because he happened to die, and the internet does not honor this in any way. Lucky timing on my part.
In honor of that man, I will do my best to keep the legacy alive and post my findings here. I myself have no children, because this universe is full of death and disaster. But I truly appreciate the positive attitude of previous generations, so I will keep our hard work intact. Enjoy all four parts:
We all have a sense of wonder about where we came from, and the search is fun and fulfilling. But questions remain: why do we exist at all? Who created us, and why, and how?
